Network & internet connection overview

Tapcoat is a cloud-based application. An internet connection is required for regular operation. However, the system is designed to run stably and reliably even under difficult network conditions.

What connection do you need?

Tapcoat works even with a very weak internet signal — check-ins are processed reliably even at minimal bandwidth. The app is optimized for mobile use and transfers only small data packets per transaction.

Supported connection types:

  • Wi-Fi — recommended for fixed cloakroom positions
  • Mobile data: 4G/LTE or 5G — a reliable alternative
  • 3G or weak signal — basic functions available, real-time reporting may be delayed

Offline operation

If the internet connection is briefly interrupted, Tapcoat temporarily stores transactions locally on the device. As soon as the connection is restored, the cached data is automatically synced with the server.

What this means for ongoing operations:

  • Staff can keep working during a brief connection outage — check-ins are recorded as usual
  • The guest only receives their digital pass after a successful sync — if the connection drops, there may be a short delay
  • The dashboard and real-time reporting are not up to date while offline — they are refreshed once the connection is back

Recommendation: Always test the network connection at your venue in advance — ideally the day before the event and at the same time of day. Large events with many guests can put a heavy load on the local mobile network.

Venues without internet

For venues without their own internet access — for example historic buildings, basements, or outdoor areas without Wi-Fi — you can set up a local network with a mobile router. A 4G/5G router then provides local Wi-Fi for all Tapcoat devices.

Recommendations for these scenarios:

  • A dedicated mobile LTE/5G router with sufficient data volume
  • A SIM card from a carrier with good coverage at the venue in question
  • A connection test before event day

Recommendations for stable operation

  • For fixed cloakroom positions: place the Wi-Fi router close to the cloakroom counter
  • With several parallel stations: make sure the Wi-Fi covers the entire cloakroom area
  • Always keep devices fully charged or plugged in during the event
  • Keep a mobile backup hotspot on hand in case the venue Wi-Fi fails
